Let Count Louis I, Countess Agnes of Metz and Hendrik van Veldeke take you back to their time: the medieval county of Loon!
County of Loon
1000 years ago things looked quite different here. There is no mention of Belgium or the province of Limburg yet.
At this place there is the county of Loon. At the head is the Count of Loon.
Fifteen graves will succeed each other here, good for 350 years of handing out cloth.
The graves first appear around the year 1018.
Their territory is small at first, but the Counts quickly expand it through strategic marriages, clever alliances, and war.
Around 1200 the county roughly coincided with what we call Belgian Limburg.
These were intense times with fighting knights, destroyed castles, burning farms, plundering and kidnappings!
Courtly culture in Loon
But there is also room for a dose of culture in the county of Loon.
Especially at the courts and especially thanks to noble ladies.
From heroic stories and love adventures, knights learn how to be well-mannered and courteous.
The noble ladies not only love attentive men, but also art, music and literature.
Countess Agnes, the wife of Louis I, is a great art lover and asks Hendrik van Veldeke to write the life story of Saint Servatius in Middle Dutch. Together they ensure that the cradle of Dutch literature is here, in Loon.
